India Responds to Iran’s Supreme Leader’s “Minorities” jab, saying “Look Who’s Talking.”

NEW DELHI: India has said that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s remarks on Indian Muslims are “unacceptable”. Posting on Christmas Day on the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed, the Iranian leader had equated Indian Muslims with those living in Gaza and talked about their suffering. “We strongly condemn the remarks made by Iran’s Supreme Leader about minorities in India,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. “These are misinformation and are unacceptable. In his post on X, also known as Twitter, today, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said: “If we are unaware of the suffering a Muslim faces in #Myanmar, #Gaza, #India or any other place, we cannot consider ourselves Muslims.”

“The enemies of Islam have always tried to make us indifferent with regard to our shared identity as an Islamic Ummah,” he added. The remarks come amid escalation of hostilities between Iran and Israel – a situation that had caused uneasiness in New Delhi.

India shares close ties with both the countries. If 80 per cent of oil comes from West Asia, strategic ties with Israel – especially in terms of defence and security – are developing.
